BRIEF HISTORY OF YORUBA AMERICAN COMMUNITY

Yoruba American Community, popularly called YAC, was founded on the precept of justice, equal rights, and democratic rule of law. On December 17, 2000, eleven Yoruba gentlemen of honor defied twelve inches of snow and made their way to the residence of Mr. Rasheed Gbadegesin in Detroit (Michigan, USA). After six hours of deliberation the name Yoruba American Community, suggested by Mr. Abiodun Yinusa, was adopted.

The men who met on that faithful night are:

Hon. Ayo Da-silva, Prince (Dr.) Adeleke Adelekan, Chief Ayodele Owe, Deacon Sunday Omoyele, Otunba Akinsola Oluwole, Alhaji Abiodun Yinusa, Chief Yisau Ogunleye, Dr. Abayomi Kuforiji, Dr. Jide Okunrounmu, Mr. Rasheed Gbadegesin and Pastor Olusegun Adebowale.

The organization grew rapidly from a mere twenty-two members at its first meeting to a whopping one hundred and twenty family membership by its first year.

Yoruba American Community can boast of many achievements in the Metro Detroit area with notable programs such as:
